Why do people prefer to start with their day with a cup of coffee or tea? When I asked this question to my colleagues the general response I got was that they are habitual to this routine of drinking coffee or tea, it makes them feel fresh, they feel charged after consuming a hot beverage. Now let us understand these replies, what makes them decide or undergo these feelings. It’s simple, psychology how the psyche of the person plays a role in our day-to-day actions. Do we ever think about how psychology is related to every action in our lives?

Psyche is the human, soul, and mind of an individual. The human brain has neurotransmitters, these are chains of neurons indicated as chemical messengers which send messages from our brain to the body. How do chemicals contribute to our hot beverage routine? Chemicals are divided into structures of neurotransmitters and every structure has different functions to be performed. DOPAMINE is one of the neurotransmitter brain chemicals, which is associated with our hot beverage routine.

Dopamine is called a pleasure neurotransmitter. This chemical makes us sense of pleasure, movement, motivation, and addiction. We have a tendency to repeat behaviour that activates the release of dopamine in our mind and body. After analyzing the responses, it clearly shows why people are so used to starting their day with a cup of coffee or tea. Because dopamine is our happy chemical which makes us feel good and motivated to start our day fresh and active. Dopamine release is also the reason why people are addicted to coffee and tea. Why do people consume 5 to 6 cups of coffee or tea in a day? It makes them relieve stress and feel fresh at work and relaxes their mind. Coffee or tea stimulates the release of dopamine neurotransmitters. Dopamine produces brain Kickstarter feelings that people often experience after their first cup of the day.

The release of chemicals and psyche emotions of the body is associated with the habit of drinking hot beverages i.e. coffee or tea. Now comes the interesting part where the release of dopamine was so strong even companies like Starbucks know that it really led to some amazing research.

According to research conducted by a real estate company Zillow the closer you live to a Starbucks, the more valuable your home will appreciate. This research is popularly known as the ‘Frappuccino Effect’. Zillow reported that between 1997 and 2014 the value of an American home appreciated by 65% but for those homes which are close to a Starbucks that number increased by 96% the reason could be, People really love buying houses where a strong cup of coffee is just a few steps away.

Marketers very well understand the psyche of an individual. It is observed in their campaigns, that majorly hot beverage brands like TATA Tea, Nescafe, BRU, etc motivate people to start their day with a cup of tea or coffee. They associate their brands with taglines/slogans like “Jaago re, Alarm bajne se pehle”, “Awaken your senses”, “Strong taste lasts long”. In one of the recent campaigns of Bru, it was stated by brand ambassador Anushka Sharma that “Coffee is the ultimate stress buster for me and I need my cup of coffee in the morning to kick start my day. This explains why it feels great to be associated with a brand like BRU, undoubtedly they understand coffee the best”.

What catches our attention when we come across such campaigns? What role does our psyche play here which influences our behaviour and actions? Its ACETYLCHOLINE, the learning neurotransmitter. This chemical release is involved in thought, learning and memory and is associated with awakening and attention. This chemical also contributes to our hot beverage routine and fixated behaviours and actions. Marketers understand this behaviour and know how consumers can be attracted and what will motivate them to buy their products. They associate their products with taglines that are catchy and influential. When we see some product conveying the value of keeping us fresh everyday the learning neurotransmitter gets activated and this might result in buying the product.

We are habitual with starting our day by holding cups and feeling the warmth that motivates us to work and perform our daily chores. In every moment the psyche, the psychology of the human brain and body plays an efficient role. Every function and action is connected to our chemical release of neurotransmitters.

Hope this article gave you some real insights about brain chemicals released and their pull on our daily actions.
